To talk about some birds (you are in a crow&#8217;s lair after all&#8230;), and there are a lot of them in the CFA world, especially in the options area.<\/p><p data-start=\"289\" data-end=\"515\">Today we are going to talk about Seagulls, and I will make this topic so easy to follow, learn, and remember, you can&#8217;t even imagine. No one has seen anything like that!\u00a0<br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Are you hyped? Not enough. Have some more, and let&#8217;s go!<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"570\"><strong>First of all<\/strong>, tell me &#8211; do you know these strategies below?<\/p><ul><li data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"570\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">long call<\/span><\/li><li data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"570\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">long put<\/span><\/li><li data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"570\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">short put<\/span><\/li><li data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"570\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">short call<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"904\">Sure you do.<\/p><p data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"904\">&#8211; <strong>Can you tell me which of these are long, and which ones are short? <\/strong><br \/>(Not that it&#8217;s in the name, but anyway.)<\/p><p data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"904\">&#8211; <strong>Can you tell me which of these are bullish, and which ones are bearish?<\/strong> Now we talkin&#8217;!<br \/>You have to remember &#8211; not everything long or call is bullish. Short Put is bullish too!<\/p><p data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"921\">How do we know? (bullish or bearish)<\/p><ol><li data-section-id=\"15hkskd\" data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1037\"><strong data-start=\"926\" data-end=\"936\">DELTA!<\/strong><br data-start=\"936\" data-end=\"939\" \/>Puts have negative delta. If we short that, we have two negative signs = positive delta.<br data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1030\" \/>Got it?<\/li><li data-section-id=\"tiperz\" data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1609\"><strong data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1072\">(Un)limited risk\/potential<\/strong> &#8211; If your upside is potential (whether capped or not) and your downside is risk, that&#8217;s clearly bullish.<ol><li>Capped <u>upside potential <\/u>+ unlimited <u>downside risk <\/u>= bullish (e.g. short put or bullish short seagull).<\/li><li>Unlimited <u>upside potential <\/u>+ limited <u>downside risk <\/u>= bullish (e.g. long call or bullish long seagull).<\/li><li>Capped <u>upside RISK<\/u>+ unlimited <u>downside POTENTIAL<\/u>\u00a0= bearish (e.g. long put or bearish long seagull).<\/li><li>Unlimited <u>upside RISK<\/u>+ limited <u>downside POTENTIAL<\/u>\u00a0= bearish (e.g. short call or bearish short seagull).<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><p>Other variants &#8211; both capped or both unlimited (whether upside or downside, potential or risk) &#8211; are mixed and can be bearish, bullish, or neutral.<\/p><ol><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ol><li>Both (upside and downside) unlimited risk &#8211; short strangle or short straddle.<\/li><li>Both unlimited potential &#8211; long strangle or long straddle.<\/li><li>Both limited risk &#8211; short butterfly or short condor.<\/li><li>Both limited potential &#8211; long butterfly or long condor.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><p data-start=\"2026\" data-end=\"2183\">These are <u>delta-neutral<\/u> (if ATM), and can be bearish or bullish (if not ATM) &#8211; e.g. short straddle below spot is bearish. Also, these are <u>symmetrical strategies<\/u>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2026\" data-end=\"2183\"><b>Seagulls are <u>not<\/u> delta-neutral and <u>not<\/u> symmetrical. <br \/>Seagulls have <u>delta exposure<\/u> and are <u>directional<\/u>.<\/b><\/p><hr \/><p data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2276\">Now look at the similarities and tell me which of those are long\/short and bullish\/bearish.<\/p><p data-start=\"2278\" data-end=\"2339\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e4b0ef e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1e4b0ef\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3996101 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"3996101\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crowlair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/all-4-seagulls-768x226.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-979\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d812ad4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d812ad4\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4762cc9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4762cc9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3 style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2278\" data-end=\"2339\">These are all 4 shapes of seagull.<br data-start=\"2312\" data-end=\"2315\" \/>That was easy, isn&#8217;t it?<\/h3><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2480\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600;\">Do we tell whether a seagull is short or long only because of similarities to LC\/LP\/SC\/SP?<\/span><br data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2433\" \/>No, not really. That&#8217;s your anchor to remember.<\/p><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2647\">The rule is a bit different.<br \/>(There&#8217;s no strict rule, to be honest. Just look at options strategy names &#8211; Seagull, Poor Man&#8217;s CC, Iron Butterfly &#8211; it&#8217;s just jargon.)<\/p><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2649\" data-end=\"2703\">The rule is much closer to (un)limited risk\/potential.<\/p><h3 style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-style: normal;\" data-start=\"2705\" data-end=\"2777\">You can look at a seagull as Bull Spread + LC\/SP or Bear Spread + LP\/SC.<\/h3><ol style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Bull\/Bear Spread is always built from one short and one long option &#8211; both net each other out.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">+LC\/LP\/SC\/SP &#8211; it&#8217;s clear, right?<br \/>If you add LC to a bull spread (LC must be higher than the bull spread), you have a\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600;\" data-start=\"3005\" data-end=\"3029\">LONG bullish seagull<\/span>. You are long 2 options and short 1.<\/li><\/ol><h3 style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-style: normal;\" data-start=\"3032\" data-end=\"3092\">What you\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 600;\" data-start=\"3041\" data-end=\"3050\">CAN&#8217;T<\/span>\u00a0do. (You can, but it won&#8217;t be a seagull.)<\/h3><ul style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3094\" data-end=\"3427\"><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\" data-section-id=\"a8wapd\" data-start=\"3094\" data-end=\"3265\">You cannot add LP\/SC to Bull Spread or LC\/SP to Bear Spread. You would make your seagull neutral. That&#8217;s not the point of that strategy &#8211; a seagull must be consistent.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\" data-section-id=\"u6xinc\" data-start=\"3266\" data-end=\"3427\">The spread cannot be in the (non-neutral range of) LC\/LP\/SC\/SP. E.g. LC must be higher than the bull spread. SP must be lower than the bull spread. You got it?<\/li><\/ul><h2 style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-style: normal;\" data-start=\"3429\" data-end=\"3451\">Why do we use Seagull?<\/h2><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3453\" data-end=\"3618\">Seagulls are great and not that complicated, trust me. I started with a seagull and didn&#8217;t even know the name at that time &#8211; and I came up with that strategy myself.<\/p><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3620\" data-end=\"3874\">My logic was: I have no problem buying that stock lower, but I want something more than just short put premium if it skyrockets. Also, if the stock price stays between the bull spread and short put, I want to earn at least the risk-free rate for waiting. You can get that bull spread &#8220;for free&#8221; (by taking on the risk).<\/p><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3876\" data-end=\"3926\">Can you tell me which seagull I&#8217;ve just described?<\/p><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3928\" data-end=\"4135\">You must understand this, you can&#8217;t just memorize it, if you want to solve CFA exam problems. <br \/>E.g. where is BEP in a bullish long seagull? <br \/>It can be lower than the short put strike or within the bull spread.<\/p><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal;\" data-start=\"4137\" data-end=\"4268\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use an options calculator, look at the stock&#8217;s chart, try to simulate your plan, and apply the seagull strategy. <\/span><b>Learn by practice!<\/b><\/p><h2 style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal;\"><b style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal;\">16 shadows of Seagull<\/b><\/h2><p>You can create a seagull in 16 different ways. I&#8217;m not kidding. It&#8217;s possible.<\/p><ol><li>There are 4 shapes of seagulls &#8211; that&#8217;s <b>4 ways already<\/b>.<\/li><li>Within each seagull, there&#8217;s a spread. You can create a spread in 2 different ways (e.g. bull spread can be built with two puts or two calls) &#8211; that gives us 2x, so\u00a0<b>8 ways already<\/b>.<\/li><li>Each seagull can be created with another seagull by adding Long Stock or Short Stock. That other seagull can itself be created on 2 ways, right? That&#8217;s another multiplication by 2, so <b>16 ways<\/b> to create a Seagull!<\/li><\/ol><p>Let&#8217;s look a bit closer on point 3.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">You can create a BULLISH seagull by adding LONG stock (that&#8217;s bullish) to a BEARISH seagull. <br \/>Long\/short in seagull&#8217;s name stays the same. <br \/>E.g. Short BEARISH seagull + LONG stock = short BULLISH seagull.<\/li><li data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">You can create a BEARISH seagull by adding SHORT stock (that&#8217;s bearish) to a BULLISH seagull.<\/li><\/ul><p>Let me know if any questions!
